GNUbg
is an amazing piece of software for the aspiring backgammon student. Configurable computer
opponent can simulate checker play and cube decision levels from
beginner through world class, using neural net technology and 2-ply
move analysis. Built-in backgammon tutor mode can warn you if you
are about to make a questionable or bad move and show you a table
of all possible moves and statistical data. You can also analyze
previously-played games, moves and matches.
GNUbg is available for Windows, Mac OSX and Linux,
and can also be used as client software for playing at popular
online servers such as FIPS. Highly recommended!

Another outstanding
piece of backgammon software, Jellyfish Backgammon is
free in the
"Light" and "Player" versions and capable
of world-class play when set at the highest level.
If you can afford it, I recommend spending the
$220 for the additional features in the analyzer version.
Jellyfish only runs on Windows platforms. Resource
usage is minimal, making it suitable for older systems.
