Can't tell a sit
'n' go from
a scheduled tournament? Don't know what a poker
freeroll is? Here's
an overview of some of the popular types of poker tournaments.
Freerolls:
Most poker tournaments have a "buy
in" - a fee you must pay to play in the tournament. In a freeroll
poker tournament,
you pay nothing to participate in the tournament.

Freeroll poker events, go to our poker
tournament listing page and select Freeroll
in the Max Buy In column.
Freezeout:
A Freezeout tournament is
a poker tournament where you are not allowed to purchase additional chips
once play begins. (See also: Rebuy).
Satellite Tournaments:
In a poker satellite
tournament,
the prize is a seat at another tournament, usually one with more prestige,
a higher buy-in and/or a big cash prize. The winner of the satellite
tournament does not get a cash prize.
Sit 'n' Go Poker Tournaments:
Sit N Go tournaments are
poker tournaments which begin as soon as enough players for a game
have signed up. The start time is not scheduled in advance. They are
typically small, single
table tournaments.
Scheduled Tournaments:
Scheduled poker tournaments are tournaments
which are set to begin on a certain date and time.
Rebuy:
In a Rebuy poker tournament, there is a period
of time at the beginning of the tournament when you can purchase additional
chips. This is usually in effect for the first several rounds of play.
Single Table Poker Tournaments:
A single table poker
tournament is a small tournament where all
the play takes place at one table. As players lose their chips, they
leave the game until only the tournament winner remains.
Multi Table Poker Tournaments:
Multi table poker tournaments are
typically huge tournaments with thousands of players. Players lose
their chips and are eliminated, and the winners of the different tables
change seats and play against each other. Eventually, a final, single
table game produces the tourney winner.
