Video Poker Glossary

Poker terminology specific to video poker.

Aces and Faces - a video poker game with extra high payouts for any four of a kind made up from aces or face (kings, queens or jacks) cards.

Credit - A virtual coin.  Also called a "coin".

Deuces Are Wild - each of the four deuces (the cards with a face value of 2) are "wild", ie. can be used in place of any other card of any suit or value. The computer will automatically assign a suit and value to any deuces you have which will give you the highest possible payout for that hand.

Double Joker Poker - played with a deck of 52 cards plus 2 "jokers". The jokers, are "wild cards", meaning they can be used in place of any other card of any value or suit.

Flat Top - A video poker machine with a set jackpot amount.

Full Pay Game - see Full Pay Machine.

Full Pay Machine - in video poker, a machine with the highest payback table. Sometimes known as a "9/6" machine because a Full Pay Machine in Jacks or Better video poker pays 9 credits for a full house and 6 credits for a flush.

High Pair - any pair that will payoff, i.e. a pair of jacks, queens, kings or aces.

House - the casino.

Jacks Or Better - variety of video poker where a player must have at least a pair of jacks or higher to win the hand.

Louisiana Double - uses a deck of cards containing a special 53rd card called the Double Card. The double card is not a "wild card" and has no value on its own, but if you are holding this card in addition to a winning combination at the end of the hand your winning payout is doubled.

Low Pay Machine - in video poker, a machine that doesn't offer the maximum payout. For example, an "8/5" machine (a machine that pays 8 credits for a full house and 5 for a flush), as opposed to a Full Pay "9/6" machine. Some machines have payouts as low as 6/5.

Partial Pay Machine - see Low Pay Machine.

Pay Table - see Payoff Schedule.

Payoff Schedule - on a Video Poker machine, a list or chart showling the winning combinations for that machine and the payback for each.

Power Poker - a variety of video poker where you play several hands at once.

Progressive Video Poker - A variety of video poker with a constantly accumulating jackpot, which is paid out only for a specific combination of cards.

Royal Flush - a ten, jack, queen, king, and ace, all of the same suit. This is the highest ranking hand in video poker. Payouts for the Royal Flush are often higher if you play the maximum number of credits that hand.
